João Vilhena Valério

João Vilhena Valério is a Legal Counsel at the Permanent Court of Arbitration (‘PCA’). Based in The Hague, he renders a wide range of legal support to arbitrators and disputing parties in BIT- and contract-based investment arbitrations under the UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules and other sets of procedural rules. He also provides legal assistance in appointing authority matters, participates in institutional projects, and represents the PCA at conferences and meetings.
His experience in dispute resolution includes having worked in the Litigation and Arbitration Department of Uría Menéndez-Proença de Carvalho (Lisbon and Madrid), where he was involved in domestic arbitration proceedings and proceedings under the auspices of the ICC and the LCIA. He has alsofunctioned as arbitral secretary in ad hoc arbitral proceedings.
João received his law degree from the Law School of the Lisbon University, and completed his postgraduation studies in arbitration law at the Law School of the New Lisbon University. He participated in the first edition of the Summer Course of the International Academy for Arbitration Law in Paris in 2011, and is currently one of the Ambassadors of the Academy.
He is a member of the Portuguese Bar Association, and of the International Council for Commercial Arbitration (ICCA).
In addition to Portuguese, his mother tongue, João is fluent in English and Spanish.
